These impacts range from energetic particles in the Van Allen radiation belts disrupting satellite micro-electronics to turbulence in the ionosphere degrading ground-to-space communication links.

Agencies responsible for monitoring air quality have traditionally relied on ground-based measurements to detect and predict fine particulates while satellite data has been underexploited.   Globally, GPS ground stations, 43 ionosondes/digisonde stations, 5 COSMIC satellites, and 3 DMSP satellites were used for this simulation.
